Linden Mater Obituary

Linden Duane Mater age 75 passed suddenly at his home on Thursday November 13, 2025. Lin was born on July 12,1950 to Gerald Mater and Dolores (Woodruff) Mater in Hastings Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents and infant son Chad, his Uncle Gene and Aunt Shirley Mater, his in-laws Francis and Wilma Lumbert and Lila and Wayne Lumbert, Brother and Sister in laws Sonny and Ellen Lumbert, Gladah and Al Thelen, Jim Lumbert, Kip (Cliff) Lumbert, Jean Lumbert(Nancy Jester) Cindy and Dennis Russell, sister in laws Michelle (Mercier) Lumbert and Merlene Lumbert, Surviving are his wife of 55 years Wendy, son Bill, and daughter Melissa (Terry) Hodges. Three grand dogs, Meme, Patches, and Garland. Brother in laws Jerry Lumbert, Bob (Dawn) Lumbert and Larry (Sandy) Lumbert, sister-in-law Martha Lumbert. Many cousins, nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews who were always a part of his life.

Lin grew up north of Nashville, Michigan graduating from Maple Valley High School in 1968. While in school he played football, did the Shot Put and ran track. He worked with his Uncle John on the farm during the summer months, being an only child some of his closest playmates were his first cousins. He met his wife on a blind date in 1969, he was drafted into the Army in January of 1970, Lin and Wendy were married on June 27th, 1970. He was sent to Germany where he worked with Nike Hercules Missiles, in July of 1970 and Wendy followed in October of 1970. Upon returning from the service, he worked for the Village of Nashville before hiring into GM. He retired from GM after 30 years and was a part time driver for Sundance Chevrolet in Grand Ledge. He was an avid U of M fan, loved riding his motorcycle, NASCAR, bowling (life time bowler) fishing at the famous Mater Pond, and watching his son-in law race quads. He chaperoned many summer games for Special Olympics. Lin and Wendy enjoyed camping and could usually be found around the campfire on their anniversary with a shot of tequila for Lin and butter shot for Wendy. He loved watching his nieces and nephew bowl through high school and his nephews play football and later the great nephews, and great great nephew aside from watching the football game, two of his biggest enjoyments was sharing “cough” syrup with his nephews and coffee with his niece at all the games. A special thank you to the trainers at Fresenius Kidney Care Clinic at Lansing West. Visitation 4-7 PM – Monday Nov. 24, 2025. Celebration of Life 11:00 AM – Tuesday Nov. 25, 2025, with a luncheon to follow the service.  All at the Sunfield United Brethren Church. Military honors with graveside at East Sebewa Cemetery 1:30 PM – Tuesday Nov. 25, 2025. In Lieu of Flowers, for those wishing, contributions may be made in care of the family.
