Robert Weldon Boom

Sunfield, Michigan

Robert Weldon Boom, age 81, passed away peacefully with family at his side at Sparrow Hospital on August 31, 2016. Bob was born on Shuman Road in Ionia County on May 24, 1935 to Carl and Hazel Marie Boom. He attended Holiday Country School and graduated from Sunfield High School in 1954. Immediately following high school graduation, Bob enlisted in the United States Navy. He spent 3 years 11 months 27 days 10 hours 35 minutes and 37 seconds on two tours of duty in the Mediterranean Sea. He believed it to be one of the best experiences of his life.

After honorable discharge from the military, he returned to Sunfield and married his friend from high school, Yvonne Joyce Cornish, on July 9, 1960. Bob began his career in road construction, which led him to finish his career as a truck driver in the Redi-Mix concrete industry. Bob enjoyed every form or motorsports and big time wrestling (which he and his father thought was real). In retirement, he enjoyed living on Thornapple Lake and wintering in Florida for twenty years. While in Florida, he played cards and golfed, the pastime that earned him his beloved nickname Putter Bob. Bob loved his family more than anything and lived for the phone calls and visits with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Bob was preceded in death by his grandparents Perry and Addie, who helped to raise him, his parents Carl and Hazel (Strong) Boom, his sister Jeanette, and his granddaughter Emily Duits. He is survived by his wife of 56 years Joyce (Cornish) Boom, his children Selena (Jeff) Duits and Eric (Peg) Boom, his grandchildren Sarah (Adam) Wrubel, and Lexi Boom, and his great grandchildren Rydik and Rowan Wrubel.

A tribute service to honor the life of Bob will be held at the Sunfield United Brethren Church on Saturday September 10 at 11am.

In lieu of flowers, please go out with the people you love and do something that Bob would’ve enjoyed.
